The Justice League has arrived but Thor still reigns supreme

[dropcap size=big]D[/dropcap]C’s live-action Justice League has officially assembled at the box office, and for the most part it has been a lukewarm welcome.

Yes, the team is in the lead…financially speaking. However, it becomes more apparent with each DC installment (Wonder Woman NOT included) that the brand strays from the one thing that sets Marvel up for success practically every single time.

DC just doesn’t do funny. At least not with the same vigor and confidence that Marvel achieves without fail.

Don’t take yourself too seriously…

Sure, DC and Marvel are two completely different universes, and each comes with its own defining characters and overall tone. Marvel is known for leaning more toward the humorous side of things, whereas DC keeps to its more serious sense of self.

Preference is everything for fans of comic books and their adaptations. Personally, I find myself enjoying the cinematic experience that Marvel presents far more than what DC puts up on the big screen. My boyfriend vehemently disagrees with me, as he reps Batman and The Flash (just to name a few), but that’s the beauty of dueling superhero lexicons.

Marvel, aware of the pitfalls of superheroes taking themselves way too seriously, errs on the side of caution with its utilization of entertaining, yet somewhat crude humor. The climb towards comedy kicked off with 2008’s Iron Man, and has over time become a true MCU staple.

I don’t think it’s a stretch, by any means, to say that Thor: Ragnarok is the funniest film to spring from the minds of Marvel. I certainly don’t remember the last time I laughed that hard during a superhero flick. (I can assure you it was NOT a DC movie.)

Laughing all the way to the bank

I think it’s safe to say I spent more time laughing over the course of Ragnarok’s run time than I did doing anything else. To put it very simply, Thor: Ragnarok is a fun movie that accomplishes what it needs to but takes some serious time along the way to make fun of itself.

Between Jeff Goldblum’s absolutely batty Grand Master character (who reminded me a bit of Caesar Flickerman from The Hunger Games), the back-and-forth banter between Thor and Bruce Banner (which honestly made me like The Hulk a little bit more), and the character that my boyfriend and I like to refer to as “The Australian Rock Pile” (his actual name is Korg), there was definitely no shortage of silliness in any respect.

If you’re trying to decide between Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok this holiday weekend, and you want the most bang for your buck, the latter will leave you feeling just dandy about spending ten bucks of your hard-earned cash and chuckling all the way home.
