[dropcap size=big]G[/dropcap]ame of Thrones season 7 has ended. Yes, I am weeping silently with a cup of hot coffee and several pieces of lokum (Turkish delight bought in Istanbul) trying to get back to normal life. What’s my next dive in the ocean of the film industry? American Gods? I don’t think so, not my type. The Walking Dead? I’ve had enough of walking zombies on Game of Thrones, I will pass on that one too. But a film based on the King of horror is always a thing to consider. I’m talking about IT – the remake of Stephen King’s classic horror novel.
Indeed, the trailers of the movie are somewhat impressive, but you know you can never trust trailers the way you could never trust Littlefinger.
If you haven’t read the book, the chances are high you will be pleased with the movie and terrified maybe at the same time. Honestly, I don’t know what to expect. After watching so many book adaptations, all I can say is that I’m skeptical about this remake. Indeed, the trailers of the movie are somewhat impressive, but you know you can never trust trailers the way you could never trust Littlefinger.
The last thing based on Stephen King I watched (or I tried) was the TV series Under the Dome. Zeus and Odin, that was a complete waste of time. A story so marvelously told and engaging was horrifically turned into a boring script and terrible acting. I could only make it with a lot of coughing and hiccuping, to episode 3 of Season 1. No wonder that after Season 3, although the story had not yet ended, the series came to a conclusion. Simply, it was tasteless.
…lots of screams and monsters…IT has a lot of that and then some – brilliantly portrayed characters and if I have to be honest, a wonderful sense of humor which can crack a smile even on the sternest of faces.
I’ve always wondered why anyone would make a film based on one of Stephen King’s works without taking the risk of showing all the brutality and craziness present in his books. Just make another scary movie with lots of screams and monsters, and be as happy as a clam at high tide. IT has a lot of that and then some – brilliantly portrayed characters and if I have to be honest, a wonderful sense of humor which can crack a smile even on the sternest of faces. Back in the day when I read the book, of course I remember being scared a little bit of what might be lurking under my bed but also inundated with lovely childhood memories and precious moments of real friendship.

In 1990 the world was ready for the first IT movie. It was actually a miniseries with a run time of 187 minutes. In comparison, the book is over 1,000 pages and you don’t have to be Einstein to do the math. Not enough. Game of Thrones dedicates more than 10 hours per book of almost the same length, and as much as I liked the miniseries, I wanted more, more of the real spirit of the novel – Pennywise, the kids, the bullies. A good sign is that this year’s possible blockbuster is planned to have two parts, which makes me less skeptical. Wise decision!
Very, very soon, on September 8, we will find out the “answers” to my “questions.” I hope IT will make us all float down there, make us cringe and swallow with difficulty. It’s high time I slept with the lights on.
