A Boogie wit da Hoodie - The Bigger Artist

A Boogie wit da Hoodie – The Bigger Artist Reaction

A Boogie wit da Hoodie, if you haven’t heard the name (I’m assuming a lot of you out there haven’t), is a rapidly rising name in New York hip-hop who I have just become acquainted with myself; thanks to yet another Kodak Black assist on the incredibly moody “Drowning.” Outside of that one single I had never heard anything else from him but once I saw that he’s already got his debut ready to drop I had to see what all the hype’s about.

“Wrist so icy, wonder why she like me, bitch I’m drownin’
In water, I just bought a Cuban, dipped it in a fountain
Everywhere that I go it’s a light show, I’m surrounded”

My immediate takeaway — I don’t see it and I don’t get it. If they wouldn’t have told me he was from New York I’d say that he was just another generic “part-time” rapper from the South. I say part-time because he spends as much time singing with auto tune as he does actual rapping. Trust me I get it, you almost have to be able to carry a melody nowadays to get on but singing is not for everyone and singing is definitely not his strength. What is his strength you ask, well I couldn’t really tell you because all I heard was production — generic, songwriting — generic, charisma — generic. It’s almost as if the novelty of a New York “rapper” using auto tune and singing has become bigger than the actual music produced. Give me New York swagger and lyricism over sub par imitation southern rap any day. That’s just me though.

Conclusion
A Boogie wit da Hoodie has created quite the buzz and many have crowned him the future of NY hip-hop. But if this generic mess of a debut is the best he has to offer then that future isn't looking so bright.
