Iโve never really been that familiar with Haim outside of name recognition, but whenever I did hear their name brought up it was always spoken with a certain level of respect for their craft; whether the person speaking of them was a fan or not. I was surprised to find out thatย Something To Tell You was only their second album but that meant I wasnโt too far behind the curve.
โI said we were opposite lovers
(Said it from the beginning)
You kept trying to prove me wrong
(Said youโd always see it through)
And I know that I ran you down
So you ran away with your heartโ
First thought after my first listen โ super unique. I havenโt really heard any act like them before. Theyโre like a unique mix of old and new that pays homage to their influences with a wink while still sounding completely new and original. For example, I couldnโt help but get vibes of Michael Jackson on โWant You Backโ or hints of 80s soft-rock on โLittle Of Your Loveโ and โFound It In Silence,โ while โWalking Awayโ sounds completely modern with clear elements of R&B. Theyโre obvious students and aficionados of all forms of music and itโs shaped their own sound into something all their own, and itโs all delivered in a deceptively accessible package full of great harmonies and melodies that belie the more complex and emotional notions of their writing. In short, I was highly impressed from my first Haim experience and itโs a wonder to me why they arenโt bigger than they already are.
