Just when I was complaining about the lack of quality hard rock these days, I get not one, but two new arrivals from two of my favorite bands to do it. If I had to point to one modern band as my favorite Iโd probably point to the Foo Fighters. They never really disappoint (at least in any major way) and theyโre about as reliable as you can get in music. In fact, theyโre one of the first bands to get me into rock in the first place.
โThere ainโt no superheroes now
There ainโt no superheroes, theyโre underground
Happy ever after
Counting down to zero hourโ
That reliability as musicians, while great, comes with itโs own shortcomings; they never really innovate anymore and lack in true musical inspiration. But Iโll be damned if I still donโt love those thick guitars and throaty screams. Itโs just what you see is what you get at this point, and if youโve heard any Foo Fighters album then you already know what youโre in for on Concrete and Gold. However, they do still do rock music better than 80% of the other acts out there so what we get, while still same old same old, is still very good rock and roll that puts their immense skill and deep knowledge on full display. Their songwriting still mainly relies on power hooks and catchy phrasing but they do poke at politics and societyโs current state on songs like โLa Dee Daโ and โHappy Ever After (Zero Hour)โ, with โHappy Ever Afterโ being the most interesting song on the album as they slow things down. Foo Fighters donโt do much new here but theyโre still the band you can rely on to make good rock and roll.
Have you heardย Concrete and Gold? Whatโd you think about it? Do you think itโs time the Foo Fighters took risks musically again? Let me know in the comments below and be sure to leave your own ratings and reactions for the album.
