Best of the Month: February 2017

Best of the Month is decided by a number of different variables; voter counts from preceding posts, reader reaction ratings, gut feelings, and lots and lots of heated discussions.

Album of the Month

Big Sean - I Decided.Big Sean is low key one of the most consistent rappers in the game right now. He always comes with solid music and verses and he showed with Dark Sky Paradise that he can make a seriously compelling album, not just singles. He’s had a steady arc of progression from album to album and that trend continues with I Decided. While it’s more a half-step forward when compared to his last one, it’s still an album with surprising depth that avoids a lot of the goofier moments that plagued him in his earlier career. He may not get the credit or respect he deserves from his peers and fans, but he’s steadily building a solid case for being amongst hip-hop’s elite.

Trailer of the Month

Maybe we’re a little biased here because we love the exceptional new show Legion, which also happens to star Dan Stevens, but it looks like 2017 just might be his big breakout year as he’s also starring in the live-action, guaranteed box office hit, Beauty and the BeastThe Ticket is a much smaller scale indie film that’s been getting a lot of buzz on the festival circuits. It’s a very well cut trailer that gives us glimpses of a blind man who suddenly regains his vision along with new found implications and temptations that drastically impact his life and his relationships. It’s fraught with tension and in those short glimpses, Stevens really seems to shine.

Video of the Month

Initially I didn’t get the appeal of D.R.A.M. but he’s been growing on me the more I’ve been exposed to him. He has a level of self-confidence in who his is as an artist that’s refreshing and unlike a lot of the other artists out there. He doesn’t take himself too seriously and comes off as goofy, but in a good way. “Cute” is a surprising banger and he already had the look and appeal of a real life Muppet, so why not go that route with the video. It’s good, lighthearted fun that’s missing far too often from music.
