Best of the Month: December 2016

Best of the Month is decided by a number of different variables; voter counts from preceding posts, reader reaction ratings, gut feelings, and lots and lots of heated discussions.

Album of the Month

Kid Cudi - Passion, Pain, Demon Slayin'December was an incredibly difficult month to call in terms of best album. There were a ton of highly anticipated and unexpected drops that all varied wildly from one another and each offered something unique. But out of everything that came out during the month, Kid Cudi’s long anticipated Passion, Pain, and Demon Slayin’ felt like it delivered the best on it’s promises and potential. After a couple lackluster projects, it’s exactly what Cudi needed to get his music back on the right track.

His overall influence on the music soundscape today is impossible to ignore, but he still shows why he does it better than anyone else out there. It’s full of all the spacey synths, infectious bounce, and irresistible melodies we’ve come to expect from a Cudi album. Simply put, he delivered.

Trailer of the Month

We also had another tough time choosing a best trailer for December as there were a lot of big names but when comparing everything, it was hard to choose against War for the Planet of the Apes. The new Planet of the Apes series is easily one of the greatest modern reboots and the first two entries were criminally underrated. Andy Serkis’ portrayal as Caesar has been nothing less than perfect and the prospect of seeing the last stand between man and ape and getting a fitting end to an incredible story arc is too good to pass on. This one can’t get here soon enough.

Video of the Month

While we don’t necessarily think that 4 Your Eyez Only lived up to it’s immense hype, there’s no denying that when J. Cole dropped “False Prophets” and its corresponding video he had the whole world hanging on each and every word. While the video isn’t some high budget, artistic masterpiece, it does what it was intended to do better than anything to come out in December, and that was build hype. Watching him go throughout his city spitting some particularly pointed bars, you just knew it was game time.
