Video Roundup 11/13-11/19

Well looky here, let’s see what we’ve rounded up this week. We’ve got new videos from The Lumineers, Britney Spears, Drake, A Tribe Called Quest, and more. Check them all out below along with my reactions.

The Lumineers – Sleep On the Floor

When it comes to folk music, it’s either I absolutely love it our I absolutely hate it; there’s no in between for me. The Lumineers happen to fall in the absolutely love column for me. They make great stuff and their last album was so good. “Sleep On The Floor” is from that album and it’s a touching song with an equally touching video. Well shot and feels very cinematic.

Britney Spears – Slumber Party

I had to throw this in here since everybody seems to be talking about it. I’m not a fan of her music, but she does have some decent songs every so often. This is just meh. The video is worth a watch though. Assuming you want to watch Britney and Tinashe dance around.

Shakira – Chantaje

This is here for one reason and one reason only. SHAKIRA. She’s bad as ever, sheesh. This song however is just bad, generic dance music.

Drake – Sneakin’

Drake goes with a lo-fi, almost VHS quality for the video to “Sneakin’.” It looks like a video from the BET Uncut days, which actually made me like it even more. Who remembers “White Girls”? LMAO. This song is ok, just an average Drake song nowadays. 21 Savage is garbage however.

A Tribe Called Quest – We the People…

A Tribe Called Quest, one of hip-hops most underrated groups, returns with their first album in decades. It also happens to be the last one they’ll ever do. They take aim at a number of social issues and the current state of the culture. The song didn’t have as much punch as I was hoping for, but it’s still solid. The video isn’t anything special, but they do pay home to the late, great Phife Dawg. Just hearing them and seeing them at it again is more than good enough for me.

BADBADNOTGOOD – Lavender

BADBADNOTGOOD are really dope musicians, and I still play that joint album they did with Ghostface Killah. “Lavender”, like most of their music is all instrumentals and vibes. It’s a dope song. The video to it doesn’t make much sense but the fact that the ending is actually a real website gets an A+ from me.

Scotty ATL – Stupid Rich

Scotty ATL had one of the most surprising tapes to drop this year, Daily Bread. I didn’t know anything about him and expected to hear the same old Atlanta trap raps, but he came with some real shit. “Stupid Rich” is one of the best songs off the tape, dope beat, and real stories. The video is amateurish but it gets the mood across.

Rapsody – Crown

Rapsody made her return on Kendrick’s To Pimp A Butterfly and delivered one of the dopest verses off the album. Looks like she’s been working ever since as she just surprised us with some new music and very dope mixtape, Crown. It’s uplifting, empowering music and it’s positivity is a refreshing change up from what’s out there now. The video gets my praise for showing black youth doing other things than carrying guns, doing drugs, and gang banging. I hope this continues.

Russ – Psycho (Pt. 2)

I been messing with Russ’ music for a minute now. He makes some good music and the fact that he does everything himself makes it even more impressive. This song isn’t one of his bests and the video is whatever, but I’m glad to see him finally getting the recognition he deserves.
