Travi$ Scott – Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight Reaction

Travis Scott - Birds in the Trap Sing McKnightIt’s hard to find any rapper in the past few years who’s had more of an impact on the current sound of music than Travi$ Scott. He took what artists like Kanye West and KiD CuDi were starting to do sonically and completely turned it up. His music is the personification of vibes and I fuck with those vibes heavily. So I couldn’t wait until he finally dropped Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight.

The way he’s been able to utilize distortion, auto-tune, beat changes, synths, and his own voice as an instrument has defined not only his sound, but the sound of a lot music coming out today. These cornerstones of his sound all remain strongly in tact on Birds in the Trap. “Way Back” is full of big bass riffs and 808’s, “Through the Late Night” uses vocals as a backing instrumental that could easily have a place on a CuDi album, “Coordinate” is a straight up banger with hard hitting kicks, and if you ever wondered what a Travi$ Scott dance-hall record would sound like, there’s “Guidance”. My two favorite tracks off Birds in the Trap have to be “Sweet Sweet” and “Goosebumps” though. The sheer diversity in production is astonishing, and none of them seem out of place. With the exception of “Wonderful”, which sounds like a weak attempt at a pop hit for the radio. Minus that one ill formed track, Travi$ manages to style all over Birds in the Trap.

Okay, I got it, copy
20/20, but I can’t see nobody
One eye open, Illuminati
This might be the verse that make ’em drop me
Ain’t makin’ friends, we just makin’ hobbies
No, that wasn’t my girl, that was just a hobby

Style. That’s the word I would use to describe Scott’s lyricism. He’s not the worst rapper I’ve ever heard, or even hear today, but he is definitely a producer who raps and not the other way around. This is a fact that he seems to know himself, because most of the time you’ll find him singing with the help of auto-tune as opposed to actually rapping. Lyricist he is not, but the way he manages to utilize auto-tune, ad libs, and his flow make for a great sounding song regardless. It has to be pointed out that he did manage to get a verse from hip-hop’s most reclusive MC , Andre 3000, and that’s always cause for celebration.

Shout my town, shout my troops
Shout my jeweler, made my chain look like Fruit Loops (yeah, it’s lit!)
Come get a taste, come get a scoop
I done made it out the hood through all the hoops (hula hoops)
I done finally found a way to make the loot
