It’s been a pretty busy last couple weeks for new film trailers, with some very big hitters getting their first reveals. One thing’s very clear from this roundup, is that genre films are no longer just genre films; they’re downright dominating the mainstream right now. Big trailers from War for the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Mummy, and much, much more. Check everything I rounded up below along with my reactions.
Well the era of the remake/reboot is still going strong as ever. When I first saw this I wasn’t sure this was connected to the classic Mummy franchise but alas, it is. They seem to be going with the highly overused trend of making serious adaptations instead of adopting the lighthearted, fun vibe of the most recent entries. Let’s be real, this looks like supernatural Mission Impossible. Never thought I’d say this, but can we get Brendan Fraser back?
Transformers: The Last Knight
Well there’s another of these. Are you really surprised though? At this point they’re like the mainstream equivalent of porn. You know the acting is terrible, the story is terrible, and you probably shouldn’t be watching. But you just can’t turn away. Can someone try to count the number of explosions in the trailer? You know Michael Bay’s philosophy, there’s never enough explosions.
When I first heard about this, I thought they were going to try to do a serious adaptation of the so bad, it’s good original series. I’m soooo happy to see they went the 21 Jump Street route instead. I gotta say, this could actually be pretty funny. The Rock is the shit.
I could’ve sworn this came out already? Or maybe it was just announced a while ago. Either way, Michael Keaton seems to be doing the impossible and full on resurrecting his career. Looks like he might deliver another Oscar-bait worthy performance.
Now this could actually be the first truly good video game movie adaptation. I mean it must have something going for it if they got Fassbender to agree to it. The lore is ripe for a movie (Black Flag over everything), so I’m slightly less skeptical about this than other video game movies.
War for the Planet of the Apes
This and Mad Max: Fury Road are probably the only non-comic book remakes/reboots that I think are worthy of their existence. The story so far had been incredible and watching Andy Serkis as Caesar is something to behold. This is a must see for me.
Did I mention this is the era of reboots? Well we now have the third Spider-Man reboot in about a decade. I know a lot of people are confused, but this go around Marvel Studios is directly producing this one (Fox did the others) and that means it’s tying directly into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Which is fucking awesome. I’m just glad they’re skipping the origin story and getting right to the good stuff. I mean, how many times can we see Uncle Ben die anyways?
Indie films, like most indie things, are very hit and miss for me. There’s a lot more garbage than good, but every now and then a gem will pop up. This looks like it could be one of them. An intense, dark ride, that’s beautifully shot. We could be witnessing the arrival of new stars with some breakout performances.
So take Apple, Google, Microsoft, roll them into one and ratchet our paranoia/reality of this new state of constant surveillance to a million, and you would get The Circle. Scary, because it’s not that big of a stretch of the imagination. I have a rule of thumb when it comes to movies. Trust anything with Tom Hanks in it.
They Call Us Monsters
There are three things I believe. There are always two sides to a story, nobody’s all good or all bad, and our justice system is far, far from perfect. This documentary looks like it could be an intense look at all three of these things as it explores how our society and justice system treats juveniles.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I know I had the first trailer already up on a previous roundup, but this one has all kinds of baby Groot in it, so it had to go up again. If I was excited before, I’m down right ecstatic now, they don’t need to any more selling. I’m sold. This is by far Marvel’s most interesting cast of characters and Vol. 2 looks to be better in just about every category. I AM GROOOOOOOTTTTTTT!!!!!!
