Stwo – D.T.S.N.T. (EP) Reaction

I happened to stumble across Stwo’s album D.T.S.N.T by chance, thought the album cover was dope and decided to give it a listen. I’m glad I did though because it’s got some serious vibes to it. I knew absolutely nothing about Stwo so I decided to do a little digging. Turns out that he’s an up and coming producer from Paris that’s best known for providing some production work on “Weston Road Flows” on Drake’s last album Views. Say what you want about Drake and his OVO camp, but they’ve got a serious ear for talent.

“You just tryna fill the void
But these boys so weak to you
Always tryna speak to you
Watered down me’s that forever try and reach for you
I just had to creep to you
Use me as a reference
You’ll never find an other one
You Khaled with another one”

It’s impossible to define Stwo’s sound because it blends so many different genres together. Pulling in elements from hip-hop, pop, r&b, electronic, and a little soul for good measure, he manages to create a unique sound that just works. It’s the type of sound that artists like The Weeknd, PARTYNEXTDOOR, A.Chal, Roy Woods, and others in that vein would sound right at home on. In fact, the phenomenal “Out at Night” actually features the aforementioned A.Chal on the vocals. I don’t know what his production sounded like pre-Drake, but the production on D.T.S.N.T could have come straight from the OVO camp themselves and depending on how you look at it, that could be a good or bad thing. Sounding too much like what’s out there could have him getting lost in the shuffle, but honestly I think what I’ve heard from his production so far is so good and so varied that he’ll be able to carve out his own lane.

“I been lost here thinking ’bout this money
Losing time, almost, gonna happen later
I see the moonlight and I feel the wave
Heading out now, leaving all the pain”

D.T.S.N.T didn’t have a lot of well known guest features but it did feature some great vocals from artists that all did the production proper justice. BADBADNOTGOOD are awesome and I personally don’t think they get enough recognition so to see them on this EP was a nice touch. “Fill the Void”, “Angeles”, “Out at Night”, “All Alone”, and “Blue Sky” have all been getting play from me all week. But in reality I could just throw the whole project on, plug my headphones in, and just vibe out the whole way through. And I think that’s what he was going for, so mission accomplished.

Have you heard of Stwo? What’d you think about D.T.S.N.T? Let me know in the comments down below and leave a rating for the project.
