Post Malone – Stoney Reaction

Post Malone - Stoney“White Iverson” was an absolute hit song. It was catchy, and just wholly different than any other sound out there, but I had little faith that it would be little more than a one hit wonder, like the likes of “All Gold Everything.” That was until I heard “Go Flex”, and “Too Young”, and “Lonely”, and the surprisingly dope August 26th. Maybe there was something more to Post Malone, maybe he had something real to offer to the culture. It was something I increasingly became interested in finding out with his major debut Stoney.

“Everybody asking Post when is the album droppin’?
Ever since the very first day that I been poppin’
Don’t wanna prove you wrong but shit you leave me with no option, yeah yeah”

Say what you want about Post Malone, but he’s got some damn good production. Stoney is full of that “trill pop” sound that he practically birthed into existence. The trap kicks and percussion paired with the country guitar strums on “Go Flex” is an example of a sound that on paper shouldn’t work, but in practice, sounds amazing together. “White Iverson” after almost two years of constant spins still stands up today as a moody masterpiece. “No Option”, “Congratulations”, and “Money Made Me Do It” are all hits waiting to happen. The way the production combines hip-hop percussions with his other country/rock/pop influences makes for some compelling sounds and It’s really hard not to get swept up into the grooves and vibes of the album.

“And I won’t go on, like a highway to hell
Going too damn fast, I spilled drink on my Chanel
And I woke up and my room’s fuckin’ trashed like a damn hotel
Where I go next, now, only time will tell”

When it comes to his songwriting it’s much like his production where it’s style over substance. A lot of mainly forgettable verses, but big, catchy hooks, and irresistible melodies all delivered in his unique angsty voice. I never got a deeper sense about who he was as an artist or a person, but I never really wanted to either. I wanted to give into the cynicism a lot of people have about his “music” and being a “cultural appropriator”, but I just couldn’t. When you’re putting out music that’s this pleasing to the ears, it’s easy to forgive his shallow shortcomings. If you’re going to rely on style as your musical calling card, then you better bring a lot of it, and he does just that.

Have you heard Stoney? What’d you think about it? Do you think he’s done enough to prove he’s more than “White Iverson”? Let me know in the comments below and be sure to leave your rating for the album.

Conclusion
Stoney is pure style over substance. Full of that "trill pop" sound he basically birthed, with mainly forgettable verses, but big, catchy hooks, and irresistible melodies. It's a solid debut that proves he's more than just "White Iverson."
