Niiiiiiice. Mixtape Fab is back. And mixtape Fab is when Fabolous is at his best. Not saying that his albums are terrible, he just always seems to enter a different mode on his mixtapes that doesn’t always translate to his albums (with a few exceptions of course). Summertime Shootout 2 is a follow up to last year’s mixtape, and continues his streak of dropping music in 2016.
Since Summertime Shootout 2 is a true mixtape, it’s a mix of production from other popular songs that he flips, along with some original production. The production is very similar to his previous mixtapes like The S.O.U.L Tape series. Familiar East coast sounds that have been updated to keep up with the times. “Goyard Bag” may be my favorite track off the whole album. It’s simple with a running piano loop, some kicks and hi-hats, and knocking bass. Simple, but very effective, laying the perfect backdrop for Fabolous to skate all over. “4am Flex” has surprisingly laid back production from araabMUZIK, and even though “Sex With Me” is a flip of the Rihanna single, it sounds perfectly at home with Fab. “For the Family” is refreshingly throwback New York production. It sounds like something you’d hear from Dipset or Fab back in the early 2000’s. Not overly complex, but hard hitting, allowing plenty of room for Fab, Dave East, and Don Q to get bars off.
You playin’ with the wrong nigga, word to Rich Homie Prolly wanna off me cause your bitch on me Gotta switch phones when it gets phony Verizon man ass niggas switched on me It ain’t about the sprint, it’s ’bout the marathon I came back ballin’ in a pair of Brons Prolly went over your head like a carry-on
I’ll argue with anyone that Fabolous is one of the greatest punch line rappers to ever do it. His lyrics have always been full of wit, wordplay, and punchlines; and his subject matter has always been current and with the times. That’s the Fabolous formula, and it’s been working for this long, so there’s no reason to change it now, and he doesn’t. Summertime Shootout 2 is full of too many clever punchlines and references to list here, just trust me that Fab hasn’t lost a step. And if you don’t believe me then check out “To The Sky”, it’s vintage Fab with a punchline a second.
When the flex is amazing, the sex is amazing Bought her a chain cause the neck is amazing I be on the grind but a woman need time So she gotta get her Rolex for her patience No, I can’t call it, but I text on occasion
Have you heard Summertime Songs 2? What did you think about it? Where would you rank it amongst his many mixtapes? What were your favorite punchlines? Let me know in the comments below and leave a rating for the mixtape.
Summertime Shootout 2 may not be Fabolous's best mixtape, but it's still a strong offering full of his vintage punchlines and topical references. Still waiting for him to 'level up' as he says frequently though.
