Video Roundup 10/2-10/8

I’m starting a new series where every week (maybe every other, I haven’t decided yet), I’m going to be rounding up some of the most talked about music videos, along with my personal picks, and giving my thoughts and reactions to the videos and songs in general. So let’s get right to it, here’s the roundup from the first week of October.

Bruno Mars – 24k Magic

“24K Magic” is the first solo drop from the Vegas crooner in a good while (4 years if I’m not mistaken), and it doesn’t disappoint. Adopting a similar style to his smash hit “Uptown Funk”, he keeps the funk going and I’m digging it. I don’t know if it’ll have the same reach as “Uptown Funk” but you’ll be hearing this on the radio for some time. The video uses his same friends from the “Uptown Funk” video as they dance through a lavish night in Vegas, complete with beautiful girls and lots of champagne. It’s not groundbreaking stuff but it’s feel good music and sometimes that’s enough.

Juicy J – Ballin

Juicy J, my eternal motivation, is back at it with a video for his latest single “Ballin”. You can tell Kanye had a hand in this video’s creation. Juicy J and Kanye in a warehouse decked out in what I can only assume is Yeezy wear, wildin’ out. Didn’t he already do this with Jay on Watch the Throne? Splice in some clips of people playing basketball on a hoop that shoots out flames and you got a video. Yeah I’m not really feeling this one, generic, and boring. Which happens to be my feelings towards the actual song itself.

John Legend – Love Me Now

John Legend back gearing up for his next album is always a good thing. “Love Me Now” is a great first single; his voice sounds as good as it ever has and it’s got just enough pop to it that it’ll get plenty of radio play. The same can’t be said for the video however. Just a bunch of shots of diverse couples, supposedly all over the world, interacting with one another with lyrics overlaid. Looks and feels like a commercial, and not in a good way.

Supa Bwe – Fool Wit It

Now this is what I’m talking about! I just happened to stumble on this video and this song, and I’m glad I did. The song itself is dope as hell. Laid back and full of vibes, and Chance sounds perfect on it. It’s always nice to see artists put in that extra effort for their videos. The animation on “Fool Wit It” is fucking gorgeous. It’s like a Japanese watercolor painting, and that nod to his producer and animator at the end was a nice touch.

Radiohead – The Numbers

I’m not even sure if this qualifies as a music video, it’s more of a live session than anything, but I really like the song so it stays. Basic set up, two guys in a park somewhere jamming out. The video’s clean and audio’s crisp. I came for the video, but stayed for the song.

Grimes – Butterfly

I’ve never gotten into Grimes; I know a lot of people have but I’ve never been able to. I appreciate how experimental some of the music is, but most of what I’ve heard has just been too out there for me. I never heard “Butterfly” before the video, but it sounds the most generic pop of anything I’ve heard from her. It’s just ok, along with the video, which is pretty simple. Nothing I’d need to play again.

Emeli Sandé – Hurts

This is the first I’ve heard of Emeli Sande, and I’ll say she’s got a really strong voice, and that voice is backed by anthem-like production. I have no idea what story or meaning the visuals are trying to convey, but there’s some pretty striking images. Interesting stuff.

Kings Of Leon – Around The World

Kings of Leon has been one of my favorite bands in recent memory so I’m always pumped to hear what they’ve been up to. Even though I prefer their darker, more intense songs (Only by the Night is still my shit), “Around the World” is still a good upbeat song. The video is very “Happy”-esque as it films people from all across the globe dancing to the song. Not the most original, but not bad either.

Solange – Don’t Touch My Hair

I’ve never given Beyonce’s younger sister a chance, but that might start to change if all her music sounds like this. “Don’t Touch My Hair” is such a dope song. The production is absolute fire and hearing Sampha’s voice cut in on the chorus is perfection. I don’t know if she influenced Bey visually or it’s the other way around, but the aesthetics are very similar in tone to Lemonade. She definitely seems to be the more artistic sibling.

Tunji Ige – Bring Yo Friends

Yo who tf is Tunji Ige!? If all his music sounds like “Bring Yo Friends” then I been sleep. The beat is crazy, his flows are solid, and the vibes are A1. Makes me want to get in my bag. The visuals are all over the place, but that’s not a bad thing in this case. The way it switches up from one medium to another and cuts in live footage makes this a dope watch. I need to go check out his other work ASAP.

What’d you think about the music videos that dropped this week? Which ones were your favorites? Did I miss any that I should be checking out? Let me know in the comments below.
