Ty Dolla $ign – Campaign Reaction

Ty Dolla $ign - CampaignTy Dolla $ign is undoubtedly winning right. He’s on a number of top 10 songs, has features on seemingly everybody’s projects, and his songwriting influence is evident on even more. He’s on an absolute monster wave right now and he looks to keep it going with his latest album, Campaign.

His production has always been known for having traditional R&B sounds infused with trap and hyphy influences. Campaign continues that sound, but leaning seemingly even more on those trap influences than he did before on Free TC. It results in a lot of songs that are clearly meant to be hits, but instead sound unoriginal and uninspired. “$”, “Zaddy”, “R&B”, and “Clean” are some of the best production off the album, and they also happen to lean more heavily on traditional R&B sounds.

“Young nigga broke all the rules
All these hoes actin’ brand new
Started off with a dime
Now everywhere I go, I shine
All these bitches wanna ride
But really, I ain’t got the time
She only call me when she want the juice”

Ty Dolla $ign is a certified songwriter and that continues to show throughout Campaign. “Juice”, “R&B”, and “Stealing” are great examples of his clever takes on the typical fare of sex, women, and relationships. His vocals are strong here too and get put on full display on the a capella “Stealing”. Like Free TC, there’s another great, emotional song from his brother who’s (wrongly?) locked up in prison.

“Seem like shit is getting worse before it’s getting better
It’s like the people got a curse, can’t nobody stay together
I watch you gun my people down, plus we’re killing off each other, no, ooh oh
Ain’t no justice for the brothers”

What’d you think about Campaign? Do you think the production was as strong as on Free TC? Let me know in the comments below and be sure to leave a rating for the album.

Campaign Reaction
Conclusion
Campaign is a solid album full of some very high moments, but also plagued by some very forgettable ones. It's at it's best when it leans more heavily on it's traditional R&B sounds as opposed to the trap beats.
