Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Getaway

Red Hot Chili Peppers – The Getaway Reaction

Red Hot Chili Peppers - The GetawayNow I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Foo Fighters are my go to), but I know they’re a staple in rock and “Snow (Hey Oh)” is and forever will be my ish. When I saw they dropped The Getaway this year I decided it’s time I finally gave one of their projects a proper listening.

Right out the gate The Getaway hits you with that funk and soul infused rock that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have become synonymous for. That continues with “Dark Necessities”, one of my favorite tracks off the album. Full of that funky bass and synths that feel like something from the 70’s. The whole affair on The Getaway is a pretty mellow one; chill vibes throughout, with plenty of room for the entire band to just funk out. It’s what I liked about their songs before and I’m glad to see that’s still alive. “Goodbye Angels” picks things up a little, with a little harder rock, and ends in a furious riff. “Sick Love” is what comes to mind when I think California rock, “Detroit” sees the band paying homage to the Motor City, even including a dope reference to J Dilla, and “Encore” is by and far my favorite track on the album and almost Beatles-esque. “Dreams of a Samurai” is an amazing psych-funk track that’ll have you feeling like you’re wandering through a hazy jungle deep in Vietnam. They’ve been at this for so long that you know at this point they’re going to sound sonically great. If I could find one gripe with The Getaway, it would be that at times it feels almost too clean production wise, stripping them of some of that emotional resonance.

“Later on I’ll read to you the things that I’ve been needing to say goodbye
Walk away from mom and dad to find the love you never had, tell no lies
Carry on and write a song that says it all and shows it off ‘fore you die
Take a little breath before you catch an early death there is so much sky”

The one thing about The Chili Peppers that never quite struck me like other bands, was their lyrics and songwriting. I was never much of a fan, and The Getaway didn’t do much to change that opinion. I tend to like my lyrics a little darker, personal, and full of struggle. That’s just not who they are, the majority of the songwriting is very easygoing, and you can bet there’s plenty of references to California. “Dreams of a Samurai” is a standout for me lyrically though, as Kiedis sings about taking acid in a graveyard.

“Taking acid in a graveyard
Stealing food to keep the night alive
Every day I try to play hard
Even with my lies”

Have you heard The Getaway? What did you think about it? Was it a return to form for The Chili Peppers or was it too sterile? Let me know in the comments below and leave a rating for the album.

Conclusion
The Getaway is a sonically a great album full of the funk infused rock The Chili Peppers have become known for. At times, too "clean" but still a very good outing.
