Mac Miller โ€“ The Divine Feminine Reaction

Mac Miller- The Divine FeminineIโ€™ve honestly never liked Mac Miller. Aside from a few songs here and there, heโ€™s never been my style. He always came off asย corny and very pandering to me. A friend who knows how I feel about Mac told me that I needed to giveย The Divine Feminineย a listen and that it might be the first project of his that Iโ€™d like. So I decided to give it a chance.

I knew that it was supposedly a concept album thatย attempts to explore the idea of love and how it relates to the universe. Right off the back, the production didnโ€™t sound like anything Iโ€™d heard from him before. Itโ€™s smooth as hell. Itโ€™s full of these jazz/soul/rap fusions, that seems to becoming more prevalent sinceย To Pimp A Butterfly. Itโ€™s an extremely cohesive sound that sets the tone of the album extremely well. There are no club hits here, just smooth soulful compositions that create the backbone ofย The Divine Feminine. It was a wholly unexpected direction, but it works, and itโ€™s very well produced.

โ€œI felt the highs and they felt like you
See a love like mine is too good to be true
And you too divine to just be mine
You remind me of the color blueโ€

As I stated earlier, Iโ€™ve never liked Mac Miller. Iโ€™ve always thought his lyrics were corny and pandering; always trying to prove to the culture (and largely himself), that he can actually rap. On The Divine Feminine, he lets go of all that, and as a result, sounds more comfortable than he ever has before. Thereโ€™s actually more singing than rapping, but the lyrics and delivery have a genuineness to them that I never felt with his previous stuff. The themes about love, distance, and intimacy, on both a personal and cosmic level, feel right at home for Mac Miller. Itโ€™s some really smooth, slick shit, that may have made a believer out of me.

โ€œYouโ€™re the only thing for me in this fucked up world
And do you believe in love?
Hold on tight when demons come
Itโ€™ll be alright, no need to run
Stay with me tonight, weโ€™ll see the sun
And when we wake up early weโ€™ll still be youngโ€
