Laziness

Like many other people in the world, I have a tendency to be Lazy.
…or is that just me?

For those of us who do tend to be Lazy, getting out of this habit can be hard, and has proven on more than one occasion to cause more problems than solutions.
Some would argue that there is no reason for being lazy at all, but I beg to differ. There may not be good reasons for laziness but there are definitely reasons. I’ve noticed that I think too hard about a situations level of convenience and/or uncertainty of something new, so even if I know I have to do it I still wait.

Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired
Jules Renard

Have you ever put something off until the next day or next week because you didn’t think it was convenient? I have, and I’ve realized it was because I simply wasn’t willing to do the work yet. Just thinking about the work I had to do made me want to take a break, but actually taking that break is where the laziness creeps in.

Laziness may appear attractive, but work gives satisfaction.
Anne Frank
(She knew the value of work and she was only fifteen!)

I realize I have been too lazy. Yes doing the work might make you tired but getting something done gives you time to do something else in the future. Having time in the future is hard to keep on your mind when your presented with a task or obligation though. There are times when I understood what was required of me, but because it was an obligation I decided to do it later. This happens to me with school work, even regular activities like going to the grocery store, or even getting out of bed and ready in the morning. It’s not something I want to do, it’s something I need to do….But shouldn’t that make it more important to handle soon and take care of? Instead, I find myself wasting time rather than utilizing it.

I’ve found that part of my problem was not having a routine, or not managing my routine. Getting things done does make me feel good about myself. The resolve felt after completing a task is more rewarding than the idle feelings of procrastination. The trick to a successful routine is having big goals and smaller objectives. Don’t always focus on your big goals because at times they can be very overwhelming. That’s what the objectives are for, to keep you on the path of success without getting lost in the big picture. If you have a long paper to type, it can help by not focusing on the number of pages but knowing how long it needs to be and setting an objective of 1 page, or two paragraphs a day, or on a certain day. That way you still work consistently and little by little you get closer to your goal.

More important to realize when it comes to laziness and not doing something, is that coupled with laziness there can also be fear. I personally, do not like being a beginner or novice when I’m told to do something. I almost panic and get defensive, which demonstrates my fear and insecurities of incompetence. For others the fear can be of change, even of putting forth the effort required for the task, or simply not having free-time in that instance. Regardless of what is holding you back, understand that fear is most likely the culprit to your procrastination. Because of fear, the hardest part is taking that first step.

Don’t be fearful, be Fearless =)
It wont happen in every instance or even over night, but try to approach your obligations with courage. Courage to get things done and handle your responsibilities, courage to try new things, courage to realize when your being fearful. For only when you come to realize something can you decide to change it. You can’t always control when your lazy, but if not to eliminate laziness make a goal to be more mindful of it; so that when you work, you work hard.

Just remember that everything takes time and there is always a big picture, but that if you take the time to handle your responsibilities (obligated objectives), your big goals and the big picture will be much more vivid and bright.

For this post I’ve chosen the classic song, “Git Up, Git Out”, by the classic rap duo, OutKast. It epitomizes everything I’m talking about in this post. You can learn more about them here and follow 1/2 of the duo @BigBoi.

“You need to git up, git out and git somethin
How will you make it if you never even try
You need to git up, git out and git somethin
Cuz you and I got to do for you and I”
