After a relatively quiet start to the year, the trailers have come pouring in starting with our first in-depth look at Spider-Man: Far From Home, and it certainly looks like a fun ride, even more so than the first, and the prospects of seeing a live-action Mysterio are too good to pass up on. I didn’t love the first one (it was good but not great), but they seem to be hitting a real stride now. I bet no one would have thought that John Wick would become a franchise, not even its creators, but here we are with the 3rd entry in the series, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and it looks like it will continue the series’ stellar action sequences. Let’s just hope they fix some of the pacing and story problems of the second. But of biggest note from the trailer, Morpheus and Neo are reuniting. Hell yeah! I’m a sucker for a good sci-fi story and anything with A24 slapped on it, so High Life definitely hit a nerve with me. Aesthetically it looks stunning, Andre 3000 is in it, and its eerie vibes seem to place it somewhere between Ex Machina and Gone Girl – what’s not to love here.
Jesse Eisenberg plays a certain “type” of character extremely well and The Hummingbird Project looks to put him back in that role again as a character that seems eerily reminiscent of his turn as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. But hell, that was the best role of his career so why not dip back into that well once again. What I first thought was some sort of pretentious indie film about the high art world quickly turned into one of the most unique looking horror romps in quite some time. Velvet Buzzsaw also gives off some very Nightcrawler vibes, which makes sense since it’s made by the same person, and a fully unhinged Jake Gyllenhaal is a very good Jake Gyllenhaal.
