Video Roundup 4/15-4/21

This week’s roundup included a very unexpected but very welcome video for Prince‘s original recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U.” There’s not much more that needs to be said about the song itself other than it’s absolutely brilliant and a timeless classic. Although it was really made famous by Sinead O’Connor, we’ve never been able to hear Prince’s original rendition until now, and it’s pure chills. The man is a genius and the song paired to unreleased rehearsal footage shows a once-in-a-lifetime artist that has always been light years ahead of everyone else. Ariana Grande returns with her first single in a while, “No Tears Left To Cry”, and it’s fire – almost like a power ballad mixed with some grown electro. Dope stuff, and the video’s Inception-esque perspective shifting is a trip. Not sure if it was planned this way but the timing feels almost too perfect to be coincidental, Russ strikes out with what is most likely a loosie, addressing all of his haters and detractors, just as he’s been getting major backlash from his peers in the industry for another one of his, albeit old, comments in an interview. I get it, despite liking his music, I often find him as grating as everyone else but can’t say much about this one here; “Sore Losers” is flames and he goes in for a solid 5 minutes straight. At least he’s down to back up what he says with his music, unlike many others I could name.

Although “Everyday” was probably one of my least favorite songs off of his last tape, Logic did make me like it a bit more with a pretty epic set of visuals. The production value is extremely high and watching old man Logic go full on Office Space and live out his best life is worth the 10 minutes at least. J. Cole just dropped off an early contender for album of the year and the project’s first video is for the standout single, “ATM.” The video is wild and super creative which isn’t his usual style for his videos but I’m really feeling the aesthetics of it all and he still clearly gets his deeper message across. I’m loving the whole direction of the project and can’t wait to see what else he’s got in store for the other visuals to come.

Check out everything I rounded up below and let me know which ones were your favorites.
